Cow Climate Bomb; Feeding the Enemy; Holocaust Denier Expelled
This week President Obama gave his big address to a joint session of Congress in which he described an ambitious agenda that proposes to reform our health care system and make historic investments in clean energy and education — while simultaneously rescuing the economy. Needless to say, there was a lot to chew on.
Will this new flood of spending successfully address our most urgent problems? Only time will tell, and our bloggers will continue to be the best guides to take you through this brave new world of a shrinking economy, expanding social needs, and more stimulus than you can shake a stick at.
Here’s a roundup from the most popular stories across Change.org this week:

Cow Climate Bomb
A new study is saying what most people have thus far been refusing to acknowledge: it doesn’t make a difference whether you raise cattle organically or conventionally; the practice is still a major contributor to global warming. Depressing, right? Animal Rights blogger Stephanie Ernst makes lemons out of lemonade, spying a chance to bring the eco-conscious over to full-on veganism. (Read more)

Feeding the Enemy
In the rumors-and-things-heard department, Humanitarian Relief blogger Michael Kleinman is hearing that some percentage of food aid to Somalia — no one knows quite how much — winds up in the hands of militias and other rather disreputable folk. Yuck. Michael’s provocative suggestion: if we can’t monitor enough of where the food goes, maybe we should shut off the food aid flow. (Read more)

Holocaust Denier Expelled
This week the government of Argentina gave Holocaust denier Bishop Richard Williamson 10 days to hightail it out of their country, where he has been living (hiding) at a secluded seminary. Pope Benedict XVI sparked an international row after reinstating the bishop, disappointing many. Genocide blogger Michelle thinks that while the bishop’s expulsion from the country doesn’t solve the problem, it’s a small victory for justice worth applauding. (Read more)

End of AIDS?
The New Scientist recently proposed a plan to end AIDS. In short, get everyone in the world to take antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) and push their viral load down to undetectable levels. Since undetectable viral levels are not transmitted through sexual contact, no one new would be infected and once the current generation of HIV-infected individuals reaches the end of their lives, AIDS would cease to exist. Plausible? Global Health blogger Alanna Shaikh argues not, explaining this is a vast oversimplification with an implausible solution that will not make AIDS disappear. (Read more)

Efficient Japanese Healthcare
We hear a lot about how Americans’ appetite for the latest health care technology and drugs makes it hard to compare the U.S. medical costs to other nations. So Health Care blogger Tim Foley looks at the country with an even higher number of per-capita CT scans and MRIs than we do: Japan. Despite using more technology and spending a higher percentage of their health care dollars on drugs, the Japanese have the highest life expectancy in the world for about a third of what the U.S. spends. Something’s gotta give. (Read more)
Stay tuned for more stimulus numerology and updates from the world of change. Don’t worry if you need someone to help translate it all into plain English — we’re here for ya.
Have a great weekend!
